CULTURAL HERITAGE IMAGING

Huliauapaʻa is a non-profit organization whose mission is to grow Hawaiʻi’s communities through culturally based forms of innovative learning, leadership development, and collaborative networking in wahi kūpuna stewardship. In an effort to help preserve Hawaiʻi’s cultural legacy/heritage, and with grant support from National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Huliauapaʻa is collaborating with Cultural Heritage Imaging (CHI) providing two 5-day training sessions in Advanced Imaging and Archiving Skills in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.

Advanced Imaging & Archiving Skills Training 

The overarching goal of the program is to create a sustainable community of practice among indigenous people in Hawaiʻi for photography based documentation of cultural material and sites.  The primary techniques to be learned are:

  1. Documentary Photography

  2. Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI)

  3. Photogrammetry for producing 3D Models;

  4. Workflow that includes producing archival data to allow reuse and longevity of the produced digital representations.

On February 27th to March 3rd, 2023, the first training session was held with two 3-hour sessions per day (9:30am-12:30pm and 2:30pm-5pm) and went over  Documentary Photography and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI).

The second session will primarily focus on Photogrammetry for producing 3D Models with also touch on Documentary Photography and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI)​. This session is currently scheduled for:

December 4th to December 8th, 2023

Program Updates

We strongly encourage those applying to not only have an interest in this type of work but to also carry on this commitment (after the training sessions) & use within your organization or within your research to help benefit the community. Huliauapaʻa can support airfare on a needed basis, however, participants must provide their own accommodation.  This opportunity is on an application and selection basis, we encourage you to fill out the application promptly. If spots fill quickly, qualified applicants may be added to a waitlist.
